Three photographs are augmented with sound. “Leaders” explores the war of statements; “Guns” is composed of the brief, in-between fragments of war reported by the news; “People” listens to the timbres of an unfamiliar foreign language. Together they evoke the past, present, and future of war: the failure of leaders to communicate, violence as a means of control, and its impact on ordinary people.
Emmanouel Rovithis created his sound collages exclusively from mobile phone recordings of television news broadcasts. The selection of material symbolically reflects the way information from a distant war reaches us: real events first captured by the media, then carried through our mobile devices into our ears—ultimately becoming memory without ever becoming lived experience.
