His practice evolved through early engagements with classical guitar and rock music, before turning decisively toward electronic sound, deeply drawn by the endless transformation of samples, indeterminate loops, and sustained sonic textures.
In theatre and cinema, Rovithis has collaborated with directors and choreographers including Mario Banushi, Aris Biniaris, Justine Goussot, Georgia Mavragani, Makis Papadimitratos, Vicky Sachpazi, Esther Andre Gonzales, among others. Recent works (Goodbye Lindita, Ragada) have received wide recognition and have been presented internationally, touring across multiple countries over the past two years.
In his theatrical compositions, Emmanouel uses electronic composition techniques to create ambient textures and intense climaxes. He also shapes musical structures from the actors’ own vocal and bodily sounds — breath, speech fragments, screams, laughter — transforming the performers themselves into the primary sonic material for the work. He refers to this compositional practice as Embodied Sound Dramaturgy.
Situated at the intersection of sound art, performance, and research, this approach treats sound not as an accompanying element, but as an active, performative agent capable of shaping meaning, narrative, and spatial experience. Sound enters and withdraws, negotiates tension and proximity, participates in moments of confrontation, resonance, and fragile alignment.
Emmanouel’s research explores how sound can function as a primary interface for interaction in cultural and educational contexts, facilitating and expanding immersive user experiences across games, narrative environments, and participatory systems.
He has contributed to numerous EU-funded research projects and has published extensively in scientific journals and conference proceedings, while also designing audio games, interactive installations, seminars, and workshops in collaboration with institutions such as the Ionian University, the Athens Megaron Friends of Music Society, and the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation.
Emmanouel holds a PhD in Electronic Music Composition from the Ionian University (Department of Music Studies), where his doctoral research culminated in the design of an electronic role-playing audio game, developed as a proof of concept for an audio-interactive system integrating entertainment, education, and music creation. He also holds an MA in Music Composition from Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge, UK), as well as a degree in Classical Guitar.
Rovithis currently serves as Laboratory Teaching Personnel at the Department of Audio & Visual Arts of the Ionian University, teaching subjects related to Audio Interaction, Music Programming, and Art Didactics. He is a member of the Department’s Special Program for the Certification of Pedagogical and Didactical Sufficiency, Audiovisual Signal Processing Laboratory, and Game Hub. Since 2026, he has been serving as the Artistic Director of the Department’s annual Audiovisual Arts Festival.

Alongside his work for theatre, Emmanouel Rovithis develops his personal ambient project Binar Dhal, exploring electronic sound as a space of introspection and drift. Pulsating between emotive drones and rhythm-driven glitches, Binar Dhal draws on Emmanouel’s memories and dreams as a generative field, tracing soundscapes that linger between what remains and what has yet to emerge.
